Old coloured copperplate map by Gerard Mercator at Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664) The map shows western Switzerland, bordered to the north by Lake Biel and Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Thun to the east and Lake Geneva (Lacus Lemannus) to the south, and essentially covers the present-day cantons of Vaud and Fribourg. With Geneva, Lausanne and Bern. A decorative scrollwork cartouche in the upper left corner adorns the title and names Mercator as the author. From a Latin edition of the Atlas Maior from 1650 with Latin text verso. Size Sheet size: 50 x 59 cm, illustration: 38 x 49 cm Condition Beautiful colouring, wide margins, some repaired colour cracks, small missing areas (see image), backed tear in the white margin and remnants of former mounting on the reverse at the top. Overall, however, a beautiful map.
