Roman or late Roman bronze amphora-shaped amulet or pendant.
Cast in bronze and formed as a stylised miniature amphora or vessel, with a tapering body, rounded lower terminal, and slightly shouldered upper section. The pendant is pierced by several circular openings arranged symmetrically on both sides, including larger perforations in the central field and smaller holes near the upper edge. Concentric circular bosses are present on both the front and reverse, reinforcing the vessel-like appearance.
The pendant is fitted with a modern suspension ring and leather jewellery cord, allowing for modern wear or display.
Size: ± 39,1 x 16,9 mm
Condition: good solid condition, wearable. The surface displays a stable green patina with areas of brown oxidation and wear consistent with age. The suspension hole at the top allows it to be worn as a pendant., now fitted with a modern suspension ring and jewellery cord. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
The amphora form is significant in the Roman world, where miniature vessels were used symbolically and for protective purposes, often associated with provision, abundance, protection, and containment. Pierced amulets of this type may also have served an apotropaic function or allowed the object to be sewn, suspended, or attached to clothing or equipment.
