Bronze statue of Tamonmaru 多聞丸, a childhood figure of Kusunoki Masashige 楠木正成. Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336) was a military commander from the end of the Kamakura period to the Nanboku-cho period. His childhood name was Tamonmaru. His childhood name, Tamonmaru, was given to him after his parents prayed to Tamonten (Bishamonten) on Mount Shigisan. Kusunoki Masashige was known as an excellent military strategist and was very active at that time. Kusunoki Masashige(楠木正成) was a Japanese military commander who rose to prominence during the late 14th and early 15th centuries, a critical period spanning from the Nanboku-cho period to the early Muromachi period. Masashige served under Ashikaga Takauji during the tumultuous Nanboku-cho period, distinguishing himself in battles against the Southern Court. He is particularly known as a key retainer of Takauji's son, Ashikaga Yoshitane. Masashige achieved numerous military successes, playing a vital role in consolidating the foundation of the Muromachi shogunate. Supporting Emperor Go-Daigo's claim to the throne, Masashige also played a significant role in the Kenmu Restoration government. He wielded considerable influence within the shogunate, benefiting from his close relationship with Takauji. However, after Takauji's death, Masashige faced internal conflicts within the Ashikaga clan and discord within the shogunate, leading to a period of adversity. Ultimately, he perished in the Battle of Kyoto, but his death cemented his legacy, ensuring his fame endured through the ages. Known for his loyalty and military strategy, Kusunoki Masashige is regarded as a significant figure in Japanese history.
