Facettierte Knospen-Ichirin-zashi-Einzelblumen-Vase von Kōgetsu (Hagi-Ware) - Keramik - Kougetsu - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)
This slender Hagi ware ichirin-zashi (single-flower vase) is the work of Kōgetsu, featuring a refined mentori (faceted) form that subtly catches light along its vertical planes. The tall, elongated silhouette conveys a sense of stillness and restraint, well suited to the contemplative aesthetics of Japanese flower arrangement.
The surface is finished in a soft, milky white glaze characteristic of Hagi ware, gently transitioning near the base into a warm, pale purplish-brown tone where the glaze thins and the clay body begins to emerge. Fine vertical traces of glaze flow emphasize the natural movement of firing, while the porous clay promises gradual change over time—an essential aspect of Hagi no nanabake, the celebrated “seven transformations” of Hagi ware.
An ichirin-zashi (一輪挿し), or single-flower vase, is a vessel traditionally designed to hold just one stem. Rather than creating a full floral arrangement, it emphasizes the natural character of a single flower, branch, or bud, allowing subtle changes in line, space, and season to be fully appreciated. Rooted in the aesthetics of chabana and wabi-sabi, ichirin-zashi are valued for their restraint and intimacy—where emptiness is as important as form, and simplicity invites quiet contemplation. In this context, the vase functions not merely as a container, but as an integral partner to the flower it supports.
Minimal yet expressive, this vase is ideal for a single seasonal stem and equally compelling as a sculptural object on its own. It embodies the wabi-sabi sensibility prized in tea ceramics: quiet beauty, material honesty, and the passage of time made visible.
A refined example of contemporary Hagi craftsmanship, appealing to collectors who value subtle form, tactile glaze, and understated presence.
