Japanische Holz-Kagura-Maske „Shoki“ – handgeschnitzte Dämonenabwehrmaske - Japan - 20. Jahrhundert

This is an authentic Japanese Kagura mask depicting Shoki (鍾馗), a revered figure traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits and misfortune. Shoki masks have long been used in Kagura performances and as protective symbols in Japanese culture. The mask is hand-carved from lightweight wood such as paulownia (kiri), making it comfortable for performance use while retaining structural strength. The rear of the mask clearly shows distinct chisel marks, a hallmark of genuine hand craftsmanship rather than modern machine production. The mustache is made from real animal hair (such as horsehair), adding depth, realism, and a powerful presence to the facial expression. The intense gaze, flared nostrils, and dynamic carving convey the commanding spirit associated with Shoki in traditional performing arts. Based on the carving style, materials, and natural aging visible in the surface and lacquer, this mask is estimated to date from the mid to late 20th century (Showa period, circa 1960s–1980s). It shows signs of age and use consistent with an authentic Kagura or folk-art piece, not a recent souvenir reproduction. Ideal for collectors of Japanese folk art, Kagura and Noh enthusiasts, or as a striking interior display and protective talisman. Materials & Craftsmanship Hand-carved wooden mask (likely paulownia/kiri) Real animal hair used for the mustache Hand-applied pigments and lacquer Visible hand-tool marks on the reverse side Condition Vintage, used condition Surface wear, small paint losses, and age-related patina present Cracks, chips, and abrasions consistent with age and traditional use Please review all photographs carefully for details of condition Estimated Period Mid to late 20th century (Showa period) Popular Search Keywords (single-word keywords, no duplicates) kagura mask shoki japanese wooden handcarved folkart ritual vintage collectible demon warding traditional Important Information ・International customers are responsible for any import duties, taxes, and fees not included in the item price or shipping costs.
