Egyptian Terracotta Amulet Mould – Pataikos
New Kingdom, 18th–20th Dynasty (c. 1550–1070 BC)
Culture: Egyptian
Period: New Kingdom, 18th–20th Dynasty
Date: circa 1550–1070 BC
Material: Terracotta
Dimensions: approx. 33 × 21 mm
Description:
Terracotta mould used for the production of amulets depicting the god Pataikos, shown in frontal position with compact body and schematic proportions characteristic of Egyptian apotropaic iconography.
Pataikos, a dwarf-form protective deity associated with domestic protection, fertility, and magical practices, is here represented according to New Kingdom conventions, with simplified modelling adapted for serial amulet production.
The negative relief shows clear traces of repeated use, including internal wear consistent with prolonged workshop activity. The reverse is plain and slightly convex, as expected for hand-modelled moulds intended for pressing clay or faience pastes.
Condition:
Good overall condition. Surface wear, deposits, and patina consistent with age and use. No modern restorations.
Provenance:
Private collection of a French physician, assembled prior to the 1970s.
