Created in Mashiko, the set reflects Sakata’s distinctive sculptural approach to ceramics, where functional forms are elevated into bold contemporary objects. Each piece features a richly textured surface with a deep-carved relief design known as “Shinjinmon,” creating dynamic swirling patterns across the pale glaze. Gold decoration is applied in an intentionally brushed and slightly worn style, giving the set a refined yet expressive Japanese modern atmosphere. Mashiko ware is a traditional Japanese pottery made mainly in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, with origins dating back to the late Edo period. It is especially valued for its rustic character, substantial thickness, and warm, handcrafted feel that highlights the natural texture of the clay. Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. He has exhibited widely in Japan and internationally, exploring black pottery alongside paper, glass, lighting and other media. The bases are signed. Good to very good used condition with very minor signs of use. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx. H 5.8-13.5 cm W 7.5-8.5 cm D 7.5-8.5 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
