Blaise Pascal - Les Pensées de Blaise Pascal, suivies d'une nouvelle table analitique - 1839
This 19th-century edition of Pascal's famous philosophical fragments builds on his posthumously published Pensées, first issued in 1670 by editors at Port-Royal.
Pascal's Pensées comprises unfinished notes for an intended Christian apology, exploring human misery, faith, reason's limits, and the famous Wager argument. Themes include vanity ("le moi est haïssable"), divertissement, and God's hiddenness. The added analytical table organizes these into categories like mind, misery without God, and routes to belief.
Ex-library book, with some security tags. In hardback boards, rubbed to the edges. All edges gilt. The front board is somewhat weak and has been reinforced with archival tape.
Frontis portrait of Pascal, and title page with vignette.
There is sporadic light foxing throughout, but overall in a good / fair condition.
Neat gift inscription to front from one clergyman to another, dated 1842.
500 pages. 22.5 x 14 cm.
