AA,VV - Medical Workers Serving the People Wholeheartedly - 1971

This amazing propaganda photobook documents how China under the Cultural Revolution rejected modern medicine. Isolating itself from the rest of the world, Mao's China instead relied on barely educated "barefoot doctors" to provide medical care. Emphasis was placed on traditional medicine instead of expensive foreign equipment. The Cultural Revolution infected every aspect of society including medicine. Miracles would be achieved through placing your faith in Chairman Mao and reading the Little Red Book. Wishful thinking replaced science and basic common sense. As Parr and WassinkLundgren note: "The medical workers depicted in this book are seen studying Mao's 'Little Red Book,' or reading from it to ethnic minority patients, or successfully applying its teachings in the course of their duties. One photograph shows a fully gowned surgical team at work beneath a poster-sized quotation from Mao in large red characters o the wall of the operating theater. The captions to the book's black-and-white and colour photos describe how studying and applying Mao's pronouncements leads to health and happiness." The photographs in this rare book are supposed to document the success of these policies. Alongside quotes from Mao, the images show dedicated doctors caring for their happy patients, who dutifully credit their cure to belief in the Great Leader. Photographic propaganda at its best. See Parr and WassinkLundgren - The Chinese Photobook , page 236-237 Condition: very good, binding tight, interior clean. Some minor tears to lower front of dust jacket and blemishes to the cover photograph. Light scratch to rear of dust jacket. Interior clean and bright. Please examine the listing photos carefully.
