The screen was traditionally made to be displayed behind samurai armour or helmet displays during Tango no Sekku (Boys’ Day), where the powerful imagery of a white hawk perched upon a pine tree symbolises strength, resilience, and the wish for a boy’s healthy growth and future success. Pine trees represent longevity and steadfastness, while the hawk has long been regarded as an emblem of ambition, courage, and rising through life with dignity. Now appreciated not only as an accompaniment to May doll displays but also as an independent work of art, such screens are widely collected for decorative use on cabinets, in alcoves, or as wall-mounted art pieces. This work is not a print but a hand-painted painting executed on silk, offering a distinctive sheen and depth that cannot be achieved with paper-based examples. The lower right bears the artist’s signature Gahō along with a seal. Due to age, there are minor wear and some stains present, particularly on the gold-toned background.
