Islamisch Mittelalterliche glasierte Splashware-Schale mit Sgraffito-Design. 10.–11. Jahrhundert
Medieval Islamic art. Near East, Persia , Nishapur, ca. 10/11th century CE. Earthernware Bowl, white slip, incised and splashed with polychrome glazes under a futher transparent glaze. Most likely Nishapur.
Restored, repaired breaks.
21.5 cm diameter
The City of Nishapur was founded in the 3rd Century AD. By the 9th Century Nishapur had a population between 100 and 200 thousand people and had become an important economic centre due to its location on the Silk Route extending from China to the Mediterranean Sea.
Sgraffito’ comes from the Italian sgraffire, ‘to scratch’, and refers to the technique, common in Islamic pottery, whereby the object is covered with a thin clay slip, and the design is then incised through the slip before the glaze is applied. If, as on this example, the body of the pot is buff, the slip white, and the glaze virtually colourless, the incised lines will appear a buff colour against the white ground.
