This is for me a first and by that I mean I have not seen this particular way of embroidering initials before. The bed linen goes back to the late XIXth Century. We can proof this as there is a seam in the centre. The weaving looms were a mere 1 meter wide in those days. So hundreds of meters of linen would be woven with selvedges on both sides. The fabric would then be cut into lengths and the young girls, merely having left primary school, but also out workers, would join meticulously join the selvedges together. The fine work has ,after all the decennia, proven that the bed linen is still as perfect as when it first decked the beds. We must point out though that the seams at a few areas had become detached and this has now been remedied. What is extremely rare are the initials B.M. As already memorised I have never seen this way of embroidery before and I find it quite magnificent. I assume it was done with very fine hooked 'crochet needles" The initials are beautifully designed in classic English script and double outlined with in the centre a variety of "polka dot" embroidery. I just cannot keep my eyes from it.!! It certainly would like to get a new home once again and to be cherished.
