Description
A rare Chinese kraak porcelain saucer from the Wanli period (1572–1620), Late Ming dynasty, decorated in deep underglaze cobalt blue.
The central medallion depicts a bird standing on a rock, painted in a strong and expressive Wanli style. The cavetto is decorated with panels containing Chinese precious objects (antiques and scholarly treasures), a motif closely associated with late Ming kraak wares. The reverse is classically painted in the Wanli manner, and the footrim displays characteristic kiln adhesions and firing marks typical of the period.
The rim shows typical Wanli-period fritting and wear consistent with age. In addition, a section was broken and reattached in the 19th century using metal staples (riveted repair). Adhesive has been used and some overpainting is visible, as shown in the detailed photographs.
Despite the restoration, this remains a rare and attractive study piece — especially desirable for collectors of early Ming kraak porcelain.
