Figur des Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀仏 - Holz, Vergoldet, Glas, Lack - Japan - Edo-Zeit (17. bis 18. Jahrhundert)

An exceptional large gilt-lacquered wooden figure of Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀如来 (Amitābha), carved in standing posture. Amida, the Buddha of Immeasurable Light and Life and principal deity of Pure Land Buddhism. Its carved standing in samabhanga , and performing the welcoming mudra 来迎印 (raigô-in), symbolizing the greeting of a faithful devotee's soul at the time of death. The face is finely modelled with a serene expression, marked by downcast eyes, gently arched brows, and slender lips forming a subtle smile. A delicately painted moustache frames the mouth. The eyes and byakugô (urna) are inlaid in crystal. The hair is arranged in tight curls crowned with an inlaid ushnisha, centred by a pink crystal nikkeishu. The flowing robes are rendered in elegantly cascading folds, richly gilt and finished in fine lacquer with attractive aged patina. The figure stands on an intricately carved base composed of joined lotus petals above multi-tiered circular sections, incorporating a shishi 獅子 (temple lion) and a reticulated globular element beneath the lotus. The shishi accentuated by polychrome details and adorned with reverse-painted glass eyes. Amida Nyorai is the central figure of Pure Land Buddhism and presides over the Western Paradise. According to belief, all who sincerely call upon his name may be reborn into this realm of peace and light. Revered as a figure of salvation and compassion, Amida gained widespread devotion among both aristocrats and common people throughout Japan. His cult emphasises faith and the hope of a blissful life beyond death. Dimensions: Height: 117 cm, Width 39.5 cm, Depth 42 cm. Figure height 69 cm. Period: Japan – Edo period (17th–18th century) Overall, the figure presents very well. In good condition, with minor wear consistent with age, including expected flaking and rubbing to the gilding and lacquer, and age cracks. There are losses to one sleeve and parts of the base. Its a pedestal petal, the right foot and right hand have been reattached. No mandorla present. Please refer to the photographs for a clear impression of the condition. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
