Trilobit - Tierfossil - Drotops armatus - 16 cm - 10 cm

Impressive specimen of Drotops armatus, a large trilobite belonging to the order Phacopida and family Phacopidae, dating to the Eifelian stage of the Middle Devonian. Fossils of this genus are found in the famous Maïder Basin of Morocco, a locality internationally renowned for producing some of the finest Devonian trilobites. The genus Drotops was described by Struve in 1990, with Drotops megalomanicus as the type species. It is distinguished within the Phacopidae by its notably large size and robust morphology, resembling an oversized Phacops. The surface of the exoskeleton is covered with prominent pustules, particularly dense on the glabella, giving the cephalon a strongly textured and powerful appearance. This specimen represents Drotops armatus, a species differentiated from Drotops megalomanicus by the presence of spines along the eye ridges and thoracic segments. These defensive spines, combined with the heavy ornamentation, create a bold and striking aesthetic. The trilobite also displays large schizochroal eyes mounted on elevated, turret-like structures, which would have provided an almost 360-degree field of vision in the Devonian seas. Like many trilobites, Drotops possessed a hard mineralized exoskeleton and had the ability to enroll into a ball as a defense mechanism against predators. Its strong convex profile and massive build reflect this protective adaptation. A highly collectible Devonian trilobite from one of Morocco’s most celebrated fossil regions, combining impressive size, distinctive ornamentation, and classic Middle Devonian character.
