Römisches Reich 3 Votivspiegel (Ohne mindestpreis)

Rare lot features three ancient Roman votive mirrors made of lead alloy, dating from the 1st to 3rd Century AD. These artifacts were deeply significant in the ancient world, used as ritual offerings in shrines or buried with the deceased to reflect the soul and ward off evil spirits (apotropaic function). Mirror A (52mm): A remarkable specimen featuring a high-relief decorated rim with geometric solar motifs and concentric circles. A true "cabinet piece." Mirror B (33mm): A finely preserved miniature mirror with a "pearl-pattern" (dotted) decoration, representing the meticulous craftsmanship of the Roman Levant. Mirror C: A larger, rustic specimen showing authentic age-related wear, completing the typological sequence of these rare ritual objects. Technical Features & Condition Dimensions: 52mm down to 33mm. Patina: Stunning, original grey-silver patina with localized earthy deposits and minor oxidation—proof of centuries of underground preservation. Condition: Solid and stable. No restorations. These mirrors have survived "lead carbonatization" remarkably well, retaining their structural integrity and decorative details. In the context of Roman and Biblical archaeology, mirrors held deep symbolic meaning, often associated with the goddess Venus or used in "catoptromancy" (divination by mirror). Finding lead specimens in this state of preservation is uncommon, as the material is highly susceptible to "lead plague" (carbonatization). These pieces represent a tangible link to ancient private devotion. Provenance: From a private European collection 1970 Legal: This lot is guaranteed to be authentic and of legal origin. A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is provided by the specialist.
