Uesugi Kenshin 上杉謙信 (1530–1578) / Uesugi Terutora was a military commander and daimyo who ruled the Hokuriku region, including Echigo Province (present-day Niigata Prefecture), during the Sengoku period.
He was one of the most renowned warlords of Japan’s Sengoku period and the lord of Echigo Province.
Kenshin was a devoted follower of Bishamonten, the Buddhist god of war, and was often regarded as his earthly embodiment. He is especially famous for his legendary rivalry with Takeda Shingen, marked by a series of epic battles at Kawanakajima.
Figures of Uesugi Kenshin symbolize bravery, righteousness, and strategic wisdom, making them highly valued in Japanese historical and samurai-themed art.
