Fluorit - Valzergues (Yellow vein), Aveyron, Frankreich - Höhe: 9 cm - Breite: 7.1 cm- 295 g

Watch a video of this specimen by following the Vimeo link below: https://vimeo.com/1168562865/d3211a52bf The artisanal Yellow Vein, which is actually a thick lense rather than an actual continuous vein, is located near the old Valzergues fluor mine and was never mined for ore. It has however been known since the 1960's for outstanding large fluorite pockets, sometimes up to a dozen meters long and featuring walls lined with large cubes. Unfortunately, most of the crystals in these pockets actually show a poor quality, with dull and etched surfaces due to the acidic decomposition of pyrite: as a consequence, a small 1-5% of the recovered crystals meet the collection standards and as usual, within this percentage, a very small fraction actually represents fine fluorite specimens showing the iconic yellow core and blue zoning stripes. The best finds were made occasionally from the 1980's to 2010's and were source for almost all the classic Valzergues fluorite specimens. This is a remarkable specimen from the Yellow Vein, featuring a rich colour cluster with a 2.5 cm top crystal! Ex coll. Bac. Jean-Pierre Bac was a highly active regional field prospector in the departments of Cantal, Aveyron, and Lot from the 1970s through the 2010s. He became a specialist of Curebourse and Enguialès, having developed a close relationship with the family who owned the latter mine. Several specimens from his Curebourse collection were illustrated and published in Le Règne Minéral (1999, issue 29). He also made several remarkable and unusual discoveries in a quarry near Miécaze. Another part of his collection consisted of carefully selected international specimens acquired from French mineral dealers during that period.
