The painting is of an series of six famous Mortlake tapestries, that illustrate the ancient Greek myth of tragic love. The priestess Hero and Leander. Leander swam the dangerous currents of Hellespont between Europe and Asia in order to see his love, but was drowned one stormy night.
The first set of these tapestries was made for James 1st in 1625.
