Byôbu 屏風 (Faltbildschirm) - Seide, lackiertes Holz, Papier, Silberblatt - Japan - Späte Edo-Zeit (erste Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts)
A fantastic medium-sized six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring an idyllic spring landscape set on oxidised silver leaf.
Rolling hills unfold beneath flowering cherry trees 桜 (sakura), their branches laden with soft pink blossoms.
Executed in colour and ink on oxidised silver leaf, which has naturally developed a beautiful aged patina over time. The flower heads are finely modelled in low relief using gofun 胡粉 (shell paste).
The painting is bordered by two silk brocade trims: a slender navy-blue inner band and a broader green outer band. The screen is set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century)
Dimensions:
Total width: 265.8 cm (2 x 45.5 cm, 4 x 43.7 cm); Height: 106.1 cm
Considering its age, the screen is in very good restored condition, with traces of wear consistent with age to both sides, including restorations to the painting and repapered patches to the reverse. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed impression of the condition.
This folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and displaying as a single statement piece of art.
When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
