Glas - Porzellan - Famille Noire Ginger Jar
An exceptionally vibrant and finely decorated porcelain ginger jar with a matching domed cover, dating to the Republic Period (1912-1949). The jar features a rich, lustrous black ground (Famille Noire) that serves as a dramatic backdrop for a meticulously hand-painted "Butterfly and Hundred Fruit" motif.
The body is adorned with large, polychrome butterflies with intricate wing patterns, interspersed with ripening peaches, pomegranates, and floral blossoms—symbols of longevity, fertility, and joy. The shoulder is encircled by a delicate ruyi-head border, while the base features a colorful stylized petal band. The lid mirrors the main decorative theme, creating a seamless aesthetic from top to bottom.
Height: 18.3 cm
Diameter: 20 cm
Condition:
Presented in very good condition. The porcelain retains its original brilliance with no visible cracks, chips, or significant wear to the enamel. An excellent specimen for collectors of late Qing and Republic-era polychrome wares.
"The use of the black enamel ground in this piece highlights the transition from late Qing imperial styles into the artistic refinements of the Republic era. The 'Butterfly' (húdié) is a homophone for 'blessings,' making this jar a vessel of auspicious meaning as well as a striking decorative object."
