Global Money Week – “From Barter to Banknotes”-Dawn of currency
This coin, a wonderful Imperial denarius of famous emperor Marcus Aurelius, represents the denomination that served as the backbone of the Roman monetary system and circulated across vast parts of the Roman Empire. The name of several modern denominations, such as the dinar, originates from this coin. As with many early coinages, the intrinsic value of the silver was closely tied to its face value.
