2017 Comm. G.B. Burlotto - Barolo - 6 Flaschen (0,75 l)

G.B. Burlotto is a small estate in the Piedmont village of Verduno, particularly known for its wines from the Nebbiolo variety. The estate is a major owner in the Monvigliero cru, and the resultant wine is regarded as one of the greatest of all Barolos. The wine portfolio includes five Barolo DOCG as well as highly regarded wines produced from Barbera, Dolcetto and Freisa. The rare and ancient Pelaverga variety is produced as a varietal wine and depending on the vintage, may spend a short period aging in large oak barriques. There is also an uncommon Nebbiolo rosé included in the collection. Winemaking remains very traditional, with grapes crushed by foot, and very long macerations. On the contrary, barrel aging usually takes place in large French oak barrels, rather than Slavonian ones. The Monvigliero vineyard of the estate is one of the most famous of the Alba Langa region. A complex soil system of clay, silt, sand and limestone components with a south-facing aspect and altitude of 300 meters (984 feet) above sea level create ideal terroir for the 2 hectares (5 acres) of vines planted here. The estate was founded by Commendatore Giovanni Batista Burlotto. The title was awarded for his efforts putting Barolo on the international wine map – the full name of the estate is Comm. G.B. Burlotto. One of the most famous wineries in Piedmont in the 19th Century, Burlotto was one of the first Barolo producers to win medals in international competitions. The estate pioneered the selling of Barolo in bottle, served as official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, and succeeded in establishing the profile of Verduno. However, on G.B.'s death in 1927 it sank into relative obscurity, before returning to prominence under his great-great-grandson Fabio Alessandria, the current winemaker.
