This antique jubako (tiered food box) set presents a strong contrast between the glossy black lacquer exterior and the vibrant red lacquer interior. The exterior is decorated using the maki-e technique, in which gold powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to form detailed designs. The entire surface is adorned with fan-shaped patterns, each featuring auspicious designs of pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms (shochikubai / 松竹梅), along with wave motifs. The set includes two box bodies, two lids, and a matching presentation stand. The elements allow the boxes to be arranged as a two-tier stack or placed side by side. The items are accompanied by their original wooden storage box (tomobako). Condition: Chips and peeling of the lacquer on the edges and corners, with some rubbing and scratches on the surface.
