A superb sample of native (telluric) iron from its type locality Ovifak, Disko Island, Greenland. The sample weighs 280 grams and its size is 5x7x3cm (small cabinet). The original sample was cut and polished on one surface and its chemical structure was analyzed with an electron microprobe. Its composition is dominated by pure iron (~97.5%) with a low nickel (2.1-2.5%) and cobalt (0.5-0.6%) content. Except for elemental iron, other minerals include cohenite and troilite. The cut and polished surface is very attractive as shiny crystals of native iron and cohenite can be seen all over the area. The other surfaces of the sample were kept as found in Greenland. This is not a historical sample, but a recent find from year 2024. The occurrence of elemental iron in the Earth's crust is extremely rare as it is associated with specific geological conditions. Only a few localities of native iron occurences are known to date (Ovifak, Disko Island, Greenland; Khungtukun and Ozernaya in Siberia; and Buhl, Germany).
