Pine and Torii Gate (松と鳥居)・Pine and Stream (松と渓流) (Set of 2) - Anonymous - Japan (Ohne mindestpreis)

Title: Pine and Torii Gate (松と鳥居)・Pine and Stream (松と渓流) (Set of 2) Artist: Unknown Technique: Hand-painted mineral pigment painting (Iwa-enogu 岩彩) Notes: Unsigned Paper size: 16.6 × 41.3 cm (6.5 × 16.3 in) Paper size: 31.8 × 24.5 cm (12.5 × 9.6 in) Paper: Washi (和紙 / Japanese paper) Period: Late Meiji – Early Shōwa period, Japan (c. 1900–1930) These two hand-painted mineral pigment paintings (Iwa-enogu, 岩彩) date to the late Meiji to early Shōwa period of Japan (c. 1900–1930). Executed on Washi (Japanese paper) with traditional natural mineral pigments, they blend decorative techniques from Ukiyo-e (浮世絵), the Rinpa School (琳派), and Kano School (狩野派) – depicting rural Japanese landscapes and Shinto cultural scenes. Based on composition, scale, and decorative character, they are presumed to be fragments of a traditional Japanese folding screen (屏風) or fusuma-e (襖絵 /sliding partition door paintings) – functional as both room dividers and wall decorations, and one of the most significant painting forms in traditional Japanese architecture. First work (Pine and Torii Gate / 松と鳥居): The composition centers on an ancient, gnarled pine tree with sprawling branches. Its needles are layered via fine, fan-shaped brushstrokes, creating a dense, textured appearance. The background features dense vertical ink lines that convey the dynamic rhythm of wind-swept grass. A red Torii (鳥居 / Shinto shrine gate) anchors the lower portion, flanked by red maple leaves and deep green shrubs – evoking the serene vitality of an autumn mountain landscape and embodying the core Shinto theme of harmony between humanity and nature. Second work (Pine and Stream / 松と渓流): In a consistent stylistic vein, an old pine tree curves over a sloped bank, overlooking a deep blue stream with subtle ripples. The background employs a light grey base dotted with fine ink specks, simulating the misty haze of distant mountains. Red maple leaves and shrubs on the right echo the first painting, forming a cohesive, balanced landscape composition. Technique & Material: Outlined in ink, the works utilize a combination of flat coloring and gradient blending. The mineral pigments (Iwa-enogu 岩彩) are thickly layered, boasting durable, long-lasting hues: Pine needles: Rendered in classic Japanese mineral green (Iwa-midori 岩緑), ground from natural stones (malachite, chlorite) – soft, matte, and infused with the earthy texture of raw minerals. Stream: Painted in rich mineral blue (ultramarine/Prussian blue range) with vivid saturation. White moss/flowers: Applied via tsumiji (堆色法 /layered impasto technique) for enhanced three-dimensionality. The overall style is quintessential of decorative landscape painting from the Rinpa (琳派) and Kano (狩野派) Schools. Both works show traces of prior mounting. Due to age, the Washi (和紙) exhibits natural yellowing, aging, and light dust accumulation – typical for antique hand-painted pieces. Critically, the mineral pigments remain bright and vivid without fading. Overall condition is good. This work is sold unframed; the images are for display purposes only to show the effect after framing.
