Kabinett - Holz - Indien - Mughal Dynastie – III (1627 - 1857)

Late Mughal Period Indian Temple Cabinet – Hand Carved Shrine Furniture, Rajasthan, c.1780–1800. An authentic and powerful Indian Temple Cabinet, attributed to the Late Mughal period (circa 1780–1800), originating from the Rajasthan / Gujarat region, Northern India. This impressive cabinet was traditionally used in a temple or shrine setting, likely for the storage of ritual objects, offerings, or sacred items. It is entirely hand carved from solid aged tropical hardwood, displaying a deep, naturally developed patina often described as barnwood-like, created through centuries of use and natural aging. The cabinet features: Deep and expressive hand-carved relief panels Sculptural figural supports acting as architectural corner element Original hand-forged iron hinges, straps and locking system Decorative metal rosettes on the doors Heavy architectural construction with paneled doors and solid base. The carving style and construction reflect Late Mughal craftsmanship combined with strong regional Rajput temple influences, a characteristic feature of Northern Indian religious furniture from this period. Visible hand-tool marks, natural asymmetry and the absence of machine-made elements confirm its pre-industrial origin. This piece was not produced for export or decorative purposes, but served a functional and spiritual role within a religious context. CONDITION Structurally solid and stable. Surface wear, minor losses and erosion consistent with age and long-term use. No active woodworm observed. No recent restoration — original patina and authenticity preserved. MATERIAL Solid tropical hardwood (likely teak or sal wood), forged iron hardware, metal ornaments. PERIOD Late Mughal period, circa 1780–1830. ORIGIN Northern India, Rajasthan / Gujarat region. Pick up possible. World wide delivery can be arranged after the auction. All cost for delivery are additional and should be payed in advance. Can be arranged together.
