Fuji Cherry Blossom Landscape (富士春桜図) - Shōun (昇雲) - Japan (Ohne mindestpreis)

Title: Fuji Cherry Blossom Landscape (富士春桜図) Artist: Shōun (昇雲) Technique: Hand-painted ink and colour on silk Signature & Seal: Signed “Shōun” with censer-shaped seal Dimensions: 126 × 45 cm (49.6 × 17.7 in) Material: Silk (绢本) This is an ink and colour on silk landscape painting with refined brushwork and subtle colouring. It was painted by Shōun (昇雲), a professional landscape painter of the Kyoto Shijō school, dating to the late Meiji to early Taishō period (c. 1900–1920). The distant view is dominated by Mount Fuji, rendered in light ink washes with the snow-capped peak reserved in white and enveloped in soft mist, creating a quiet and serene atmosphere typical of the Japanese Meisho-e (famous place painting) tradition. The layered distant mountains are washed in pale ink to create a hazy depth, following the Eastern landscape principle of “distant small, near large”. An elegantly composed cherry blossom tree extends from the lower right, with vigorous branches and blossoms dotted in white and red. It retains realistic observation while displaying the decorative line quality characteristic of the Shijō school. The composition is broad and expansive, contrasting the solemn majesty of Mount Fuji with the gentle grace of cherry blossoms, expressing a calm and leisurely Japanese aesthetic sensibility. In the lower right corner, the artist’s ink signature “Shōun (昇雲)” appears, below which is a red censer-shaped personal seal with seal script, consistent with the archaic vessel-shaped seals commonly used by Shijō school artists. The work retains traces of an old mounting. Over the course of a century, it shows natural signs of age including silk oxidation, discoloration, creases and minor edge wear, but is in generally good condition. This work is sold unframed; the images are for display purposes only to show the effect after framing.
