Eugenios Spatharis (1924–2009) was the great master of the Greek shadow theatre and the son of the renowned Karagiozis performer Sotiris Spatharis. Beginning his career during the years of the Occupation, he continued throughout his life to give countless performances in Greece and abroad. Eugenios Spatharis played a decisive role in making shadow theatre beloved by both children and adults, establishing it as an exceptional art form that offers not only entertainment but also education.
Thanks to his recordings and later television broadcasts, his works reached every Greek household and helped raise generations of children, contributing to the survival of the art form into the modern era of contemporary media. Spatharis enriched the traditional repertoire with new comic, historical, and mythological themes, and adapted ancient tragedies and comedies, as well as the Odyssey and Erotokritos.
He was a multifaceted talent: an important folk painter, as well as a set designer, costume designer, and director in theatrical adaptations of Karagiozis. The intellectual legacy of the Spatharis family is preserved and continued by the Spathario Museum, founded by Eugenios in Marousi.
