Pair of Shan Wood Figures of Phra Sangkhachai (Sanghachai),
A rare and appealing pair of Shan-style wooden figures depicting Sanghachai, the revered Buddhist monk associated with prosperity, contentment, and abundance.
Unlike the slender form of the historical Buddha, Sangkhachai is characteristically shown with a rounded face and pronounced belly, symbolizing wealth and happiness—features clearly present in both carvings.
Larger Figure
Height: 21,5 cm
A finely carved example in light-toned wood, seated in meditation with hands in dhyana mudra. The figure displays typical Shan stylistic traits: simplified anatomy, elongated earlobes, and a calm, introspective expression. Mounted on a plain integral block base, emphasizing its folk-art character. The surface shows attractive grain and a naturally developed patina.
Smaller Figure
Height: 15 cm
A more compact carving retaining traces of original gilding and lacquer, now worn to a rich, textured surface. The square base is incised with Burmese script, likely devotional or dedicatory inscriptions. The figure’s rounded torso and gentle expression strongly reflect the Sangkhachai iconography.
