Antikes geschnitztes Karneol-Camee – Zeus, Hera und Adler-Szene Camée - Grand Tour (Ohne mindestpreis)

A finely carved 19th-century Grand Tour cameo in natural carnelian, depicting a rich mythological composition centred on Zeus (Jupiter), the supreme god of ancient Greek mythology. The scene presents Zeus in classical profile, accompanied by a secondary female profile, most likely Hera (Juno), symbolising divine union and authority. Beneath them appears the eagle, Zeus’ sacred emblem, representing power, sovereignty and dominion over the heavens. A further seated figure is shown upon the eagle, suggestive of Ganymede or a mythological attendant, reinforcing the celestial narrative. The composition is set against a softly rendered cloud base, indicating the divine realm of Mount Olympus. The carving is executed in subtle relief, allowing the natural banding and warm tones of the carnelian to enhance the depth and atmosphere of the scene. Such multi-figure mythological cameos were highly sought after during the Grand Tour period, where travellers collected finely carved pieces inspired by classical antiquity. This example stands out for its narrative complexity and symbolic richness, rather than a simple portrait. Object Details: • Object type: Loose carved cameo • Material: Natural carnelian • Subject: Zeus, Hera & mythological eagle scene • Origin: Italy – Grand Tour period • Era: 19th century (Victorian) • Dimensions: Approx. 4.7 cm × 3.9 cm • Weight: Approx. 10.80 g • Condition: Good antique condition. The carving remains clear and well preserved. There is light wear to the top and bottom left of the carnelian, however this blends into the natural banding of the stone, making it difficult to notice. A beautifully symbolic and narrative Grand Tour cameo, combining multiple classical elements into a single refined composition — an excellent addition for collectors of mythological and antique glyptic art.
