Bizen Ware Tea Set (Teapot and Two Cups)
Japan, Meiji–Taishō period (late 19th – early 20th century)
A small Bizen ware (備前焼) tea set comprising a kyūsu teapot and two sencha cups. The pieces are made in the characteristic Bizen stoneware tradition and display a rugged “iwa-hada” (rock-surface) texture, giving the surface an appearance reminiscent of natural stone. The firing has produced attractive reddish-brown and dark tones, typical of Bizen pottery and evocative of the natural ash effects achieved in traditional wood-fired kilns.
Bizen ware is one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, celebrated for its unglazed surfaces and subtle variations created during the firing process. Tea utensils in this style are appreciated for their rustic aesthetic and strong connection to the Japanese tea culture.
