Okina occupies a unique position within the Noh tradition as the oldest and most venerable mask type. It is distinguished by its split chin, a defining feature believed to derive from elder masks used in ancient Bugaku court performances. Although the chin appears divided, this example is made using the dry lacquer technique, and the form is intentional rather than the result of damage. The interior of the mask retains a signed label bearing the artist’s name and seal. The label shows foxing. Original cords are present. The surface shows age-related wear, including rubbing, areas of paint loss, discoloration, and yellowing consistent with long-term storage and use. Please refer to the photos for details.
