This is a stunning Tanba-yaki (Tanba ware) ceramic wall plaque titled "Sosei - Manyo Touban" (Creation - Manyo Ceramic Board), created by the award-winning artist Keiichi Shimizu (清水圭一).
The piece features a beautiful Ash Glaze (Hai-yu), which creates a rich, earthy texture and subtle coloration unique to high-fired Tanba stoneware. Adhered to the surface are poetic inscriptions referencing the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest collection of waka poetry, blending ancient literary tradition with modern ceramic sculpture.
About the Artist: Keiichi Shimizu (清水圭一)
Born into the heritage of Tanba-Tachikui ware, Shimizu is a highly decorated artist with numerous accolades, including selections for the prestigious Nitten Exhibition and the Japan Modern Fine Arts and Crafts Exhibition. His works are known for their experimental yet grounded approach to clay.
