Turkana-Speiseschale („Atubwa“), Kenia (Ohne mindestpreis)

Turkana food bowl (“Atubwa”), Kenya HIGHLIGHTS • Fine Turkana wooden food bowl • Elegant asymmetrical-oval form • Central pyrographed decoration • Indigenous aluminium repair • Beautiful patina of use • Carved from a single block of wood • Collected in situ DETAILS Origin: Turkana people, Kenya Material: Wood, aluminium Dimensions: 19.5 × 13 × H 11.5 cm Provenance: Collected in situ Period: 20th century DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION A fine Turkana wooden food bowl of the atubwa type, carved from a single block of wood and distinguished by its balanced proportions, warm patina and restrained decorative treatment. Though modest in scale, it is a characterful domestic object shaped by daily use. ETHNOGRAPHIC CONTEXT Among the Turkana of northern Kenya, domestic utensils are closely tied to a mobile way of life in which objects must remain functional, durable and easy to handle. Bowls of this kind were intended for food or water and belong to a long tradition of practical wooden vessels whose forms have been refined over generations. Their apparent simplicity often conceals a strong sense of proportion and careful craftsmanship. FORM AND DECORATION This example has a rounded, deep body with slightly raised lateral ends and an inward-curving upper edge that gives the form both stability and visual tension. The symmetry of the piece is reinforced by a central pyrographed motif running vertically across the exterior, creating a discreet but effective decorative accent. REPAIR AND SURFACE Particularly noteworthy is the presence of an old indigenous aluminium repair, testifying to the value of the object in use and to a practical tradition of maintenance rather than replacement. The wood shows a fine, smooth patina, with visible wear, handling marks and age-related surface variation consistent with prolonged domestic use. CONDITION Good overall condition. Fine patina of use. Visible age-related wear, abrasions and minor surface marks. Old indigenous aluminium repair. No stand.
