Yoruba Ifa divination tray (“Opon Ifa”), Nigeria HIGHLIGHTS • Fine Yoruba opon Ifa divination tray • Rectangular format with carved Èṣù face on the rim • Beautiful soft ritual handling patina • Traces of white pigment in the recesses • Rich geometric border carving • Ex-collection Alan Donovan • Strong ritual presence DETAILS Origin: Yoruba people, Nigeria Material: Wood Dimensions: 35 × 23 cm Provenance: Ex-collection Alan Donovan, Los Angeles (USA) Period: Probably mid-20th century Condition: Age-consistent wear; soft handling patina; traces of white pigment; minor nicks and abrasions DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION A fine Yoruba opon Ifa divination tray distinguished by its elegant rectangular format, richly carved geometric border and the small face of Èṣù set on the upper rim. The piece shows clear signs of ritual handling and use, giving it both ethnographic depth and strong visual presence. CONTEXT / FUNCTION In the Yoruba world, the opon Ifa is the divination tray used by the babalawo in the practice of Ifa. Fine powder is spread across the smooth central field, on which the diviner inscribes the signs revealed during consultation. The carved face of Èṣù on the rim refers to the divine intermediary associated with communication, mediation and the efficacy of divination. FORM AND CARVING This example takes the form of a rectangular tray with slightly outward-flaring ends and a broad recessed central field framed by a carefully carved geometric border. The ornament alternates triangular and cross-hatched motifs, creating a lively but balanced rhythm. At the top of the field appears a small stylized face, discreet but essential to the identity of the piece. SURFACE AND USE The tray has developed a soft, soapy handling patina, especially visible across the central field, which shows long ritual use. Traces of white pigment remain lodged in the carved recesses and worn areas, reinforcing the impression of sustained liturgical handling rather than simple decorative display. CONDITION Good overall condition with age-consistent wear. Soft ritual handling patina. Traces of white pigment in recesses. Minor nicks, abrasions and small losses consistent with age and use.
