An interesting rare 5-part carved pedestal garden lantern 立ち灯籠 (tachi'dôrô) of unusual form. The shaft is moulded to resemble a natural curving tree branch. It carries the lantern housing which is shaped as a small traditional dwelling, an especially charming and uncommon feature. This type is known as 'kusaya ishidôrô' 草屋石灯籠, referring to rustic thatched houses (kusaya) once found throughout the Japanese countryside.
