A very large and serene stone stele carved from solid grey granite, depicting Jizô Bosatsu 地蔵菩薩 in relief. The compassionate bodhisattva is shown standing in quiet meditation, rendered in the form of a humble monk. The figure holds a wish-fulfilling jewel 玉 (tama) and a ritual staff (shakujô 錫杖), traditionally used to awaken beings from delusion and guide lost souls. Above the head is a bonji (Sanskrit seed syllable). An inscription along the side records the date as Shôtoku 4 正徳四年, corresponding to the year 1714. Jizô Bosatsu, affectionately known as Ojizô-sama, is one of the most beloved figures in Japanese Buddhism. Revered as the protector of children, travellers, and those in need, he is especially associated with guiding the souls of the deceased. He is often depicted carrying a staff to open the gates of hell and a jewel to illuminate darkness. His image is commonly found along roadsides, in graveyards, and at temple precincts, serving as a source of comfort and protection.
