The artist is a Japanese painter, signed Tenryūchi (天龍ち), art name Kōjin (こう神), created circa 1930s–1950s (Showa period, 20th century). Executed in the literati painting (Nanga, 南画) style, the work uses the boneless (mokkotsu, 没骨法) technique for the peony blossoms, with bold, concise ink lines defining the branches and leaves. The ample negative space reflects the Japanese literati aesthetic of yūgen (幽玄，mystery and subtle depth) and seikan (清简，purity and simplicity).
