This is a cloisonné (shippou yaki 七宝焼) vase with a large Mt. Fuji on a dark blue base. Mount Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain and with its wide, spreading base, is known as an auspicious symbol of good fortune, longevity, prosperity of descendants, and business prosperity. It's also an object of worship as a sacred mountain, and its association with immortality (Fuji) makes it an auspicious design for celebratory gifts. Specific meanings of Mount Fuji images Flattening (prosperity and development): Because its base spreads out like the Japanese character "eight," it symbolizes future development and happiness. Sacred mountain (sacred and warding off evil): As an object of worship, it is believed to possess mystical powers and ward off evil spirits. Wishes for immortality: Since "Fuji" is associated with "immortality," it is often depicted on helmets and other objects as a symbol of good health and longevity. During the Sengoku period, warlords would also depict it on their helmets in hopes of long and successful military endeavors. Lucky charms for the first dream of the year: As the saying goes, "First, Fuji, second, hawk, third, eggplant," seeing Mount Fuji in a dream is considered extremely auspicious. Cloisonné is a type of decorative work in which enamel, glass, or gemstones are separated by strips of flattened wire placed edgeways on a metal backing. It is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then is painted into the cloisons (compartments) of the design. The piece is fired in a kiln, allowing the enamel to melt and harden into a smooth, glossy surface. The name "cloisonné" comes from the French word "cloison," meaning "partition" or "compartment," referring to the cells created by the wire.
