Kingdom of Pontus – Amisos mint (modern-day Samsun, Turkey)
Mithridates VI Eupator (circa 101–85 BC)
AE Coin
A bronze issue from the reign of Mithridates VI Eupator, one of the most powerful and famous opponents of Rome. His rule was defined by the Mithridatic Wars, during which he challenged Roman dominance in the eastern Mediterranean.
The obverse features the head of Dionysos facing right, wearing an ivy wreath — a symbol of divine power, vitality, and royal association. The reverse shows a thyrsos, accompanied by the legend AMIΣOY (Amisos), identifying the important Black Sea mint.
Coins of Mithridates VI often emphasize Dionysian imagery, reflecting both his personal propaganda and his connection to Greek cultural traditions across his kingdom.
A historically important and collectible issue from a ruler closely tied to Rome’s eastern conflicts.
