Item Description:
Yūsai Hanaike — Flower Vase with Misty Lustre Decoration, by Tachikichi (橘吉), Kyoto
A superb globular flower vase (hanaike) in the yūsai ("misty lustre") style, produced by Tachikichi — one of Kyoto's most prestigious and long-established ceramics houses, with a history spanning over 270 years.
The vessel presents a beautifully balanced, egg-shaped silhouette with a narrow mouth, and is covered in a deep matte charcoal-grey glaze of exceptional quality and depth.
Across the upper half of the body, a luminous band of warm golden-bronze lustre (yūsai) graduates softly from the dark ground, evoking the glow of a dawn sky or the shimmer of moonlight on still water.
Within this lustrous field, two cranes in flight (tsuru) are rendered in low relief and engraved line work — their elegant forms captured mid-wing, accompanied by sweeping curved lines suggesting wind or water.
The crane, a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture, lends this piece an auspicious and meditative quality.
The base bears the artist's impressed seal, and the piece is accompanied by its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed Yūsai Hanaike with the Tachikichi seal.
