In Nepal, the shaman plays an important role in society. He wears this mask while channeling spirits, allowing him to attract the right spirits and ward off evil spirits. These 'good' spirits help cure illnesses and guide villagers through important life changes involving the spirit world, such as birth, change in social status and death. 3th quarter 20th century.

Such a mask can also be hung indoors, where it fulfills a protective function.

Tribal used. Good/fair condition, it is old and has traces from decades of use and some dry-cracks. The mask is still very stable.
