Hohe Kupfer-Blumenvase mit gehämmertem Blütenrelief — schräg zulaufender Rand, Yamagata Casting - Kupfer - 長谷川恵久 Hasegawa Yoshihisa(1938- ) - Japan - 1900–2000

Item Description: 長谷川恵久 Hasegawa Yoshihisa(1938- )— Cast Copper Flower Vase, Hammered Relief Decoration (Doki Hanaire) A striking cast copper flower vase by Hasegawa Yoshihisa, a skilled metal craftsman working within the distinguished Yamagata casting tradition — one of Japan's oldest metalworking lineages, designated as a national Traditional Craft in 1975. The vase takes a bold, tall cylindrical form inspired by the natural beauty of bamboo, with a deliberately angled, obliquely cut mouth that lends the piece a dynamic, asymmetrical presence. The entire outer surface is richly textured through hand-hammering, creating a lively, undulating skin that catches and diffuses light beautifully. Two horizontal bands of raised dot motifs encircle the body at upper and lower registers, and at the center of the body a bold cluster of densely packed raised bosses forms a dynamic floral relief pattern — a masterful expression of sculptural metalwork. The interior shows a naturally oxidized dark patina, contrasting with the warm golden-amber and terracotta tones of the exterior surface. The base bears the artist's impressed square seal mark. A commanding work of considerable weight and presence, entirely suited to both tea ceremony and contemporary interior display. Size Height: 21 cm Width: 5.5 cm Depth: 5.5 cm Weight: 1,206 g Condition The piece shows age-related surface discoloration, minor scratches, and natural patina variation consistent with use and age; no structural damage noted. Artist Profile 長谷川恵久 Hasegawa Yoshihisa (1938– ) is a metal craftsman working within the Yamagata casting (Yamagata Imono) tradition — a historic metalworking craft with approximately 900 years of history, centered in Yamagata City and designated as a national Traditional Craft in 1975. The tradition is renowned for producing exceptionally refined cast metalwork in both iron and copper alloys, employing techniques including sand-mold casting, hand-hammering, relief pattern work, and traditional chemical patination finishing. Hasegawa specializes in cast copper flower vases distinguished by bold sculptural surface decoration and rich natural patina, and authenticates his works with a personal impressed seal on the base. His pieces are sought after as refined objects for both tea ceremony settings and contemporary collectors.
