Retro Romance (レトロ・ロマンス) - Seizo Watase (渡瀬誠造,b.1945) - Japan (Ohne mindestpreis)

Title: Retro Romance (レトロ・ロマンス) Artist: Seizo Watase (渡瀬誠造,b.1945) Technique: Digital Print With artist’s name metal plaque Image size: 34 × 23.5 cm (13.4 × 9.3 in) Framed size: 49.2 × 38.8 × 3.0 cm (19.4 × 15.3 × 1.2 in) Paper: Fine Art Paper This beautiful romantic illustration was created by Seizo Watase, one of Japan’s most celebrated national illustrators. The print was officially published in 2007 by Applefarm inc.Inspired by Mojikō Station (もじこうえき) in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, it is a signature work of the artist’s iconic retro-romantic style. Seizo Watase is a renowned Japanese manga artist and illustrator, and a graduate of the Faculty of Law, Waseda University. He rose to nationwide fame in 1983 with his masterpiece Heart Cocktail (ハートカクテル). Famous for his tender depictions of urban romance and nostalgic cityscapes, he is a pioneer of Japanese full-color manga and a defining artist of Japan’s City-Pop culture. Set against a classic retro Japanese urban train station, the work captures a tender moment of a young couple walking hand in hand: In the foreground, the woman wears a white floral dress, a red short coat, and red boots, carrying a pink handbag. The man wears a checkered casual blazer and jeans, holding a travel bag. Their relaxed, sweet chemistry fills the scene. The background features a vintage station building blending Western and Japanese design (a classic Taishō–Shōwa era architectural style), complemented by a fountain, autumn trees, and a bright blue sky with white clouds, creating a strong sense of Shōwa nostalgia and everyday warmth. With clean, crisp lines and warm, soothing colors, the work perfectly embodies Watase’s signature “Urban Romantic Illustration” style, capturing the gentle daily moments of modern Japanese men and women — one of his most representative themes. Published by Applefarm inc., Japan’s exclusive official publisher for Seizo Watase, this piece is issued as a limited-edition print. It includes an engraved metal plaque with the artist’s name below the image, and an official label on the backing board detailing the artist, title, dimensions, and publisher. As the work is sealed in its original frame, further details of the verso cannot be photographed. The piece retains its original framing with a black solid wood frame and acrylic panel. The frame shows minor friction and signs of normal use; the print exhibits slight natural oxidation due to age. Overall, the condition is good. Due to service suspension, Taiwan Post EMS has suspended parcel delivery to the following countries starting March 10, 2026: United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Israel, Pakistan, Maldives, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Greece, Egypt, Morocco.
