Item Description: Shino Flower Vase (Hana-ire) A refined and tactile Shino-ware flower vase (hana-ire) by Suzuki Goro, one of Japan's most celebrated contemporary ceramic artists working in the Mino tradition. The vessel displays the characteristic hallmarks of Suzuki's Shino work: a warm, milky white glaze with subtle orange-red flame markings (hi-iro) and delicate surface texture that rewards close inspection. The generous yet intimate form invites both a single stem and the eye, embodying the wabi aesthetic central to Japanese tea culture. Artist Profile 鈴木五郎 Suzuki Goro (1941–) was born in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, and began his ceramic practice in 1957. He made his debut at the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) in 1962 and went on to win numerous awards including the Asahi Ceramic Arts Exhibition Governor's Prize (1963), the Asahi Ceramic Arts Exhibition Grand Prize (1966), and the Japan Ceramic Society Prize (2002). He has held solo exhibitions at major department stores and galleries across Japan, and has been active internationally as an invited artist and exhibitor. Suzuki is widely regarded as a leading figure in the revival and reinterpretation of Momoyama-period Mino ceramics — particularly Shino and Oribe wares.
