Tsugaru-nuri Quadrat-Fuß-Tablett – Großes antikes japanisches Lackwerk, vierbeiniger Servierständer - Holz, Zeder - Japan - 20. Jahrhundert

Description: A magnificent large Japanese lacquerware footed tray (zen / 膳) crafted in the celebrated Tsugaru-nuri (津軽塗) tradition of Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan — one of the country's most technically demanding and visually striking lacquerware styles, with a history spanning over 300 years. The surface is entirely covered in the iconic Kara-nuri (唐塗) technique — Tsugaru-nuri's most recognisable and labour-intensive finish. Kara-nuri is achieved by applying multiple layers of differently coloured lacquers, then working the surface with a special spatula to create an endlessly complex, three-dimensional texture of interlocking organic shapes. No two Kara-nuri pieces are ever identical — the swirling, lava-like patterns of deep crimson, burnt orange, forest green, gold, and near-black across this tray form an utterly unique composition that rewards close inspection. The form is equally impressive. The square tray sits on four beautifully sculpted legs with a distinctive bracket-foot profile — visible as elegant splayed supports when viewed from below — that elevate the piece with both stability and visual drama. The raised rim curves gently inward around the perimeter with a refined, sweeping profile that speaks to the skill of the craftsman. The underside of the tray is finished in deep, lustrous black lacquer, providing a striking contrast to the wild richness of the upper surface. This piece functions equally well as a serving tray for Japanese tea ceremony or formal dining, as a display platform for art objects, bonsai, or ikebana, or simply as a sculptural statement piece in a contemporary interior. Its scale and visual presence make it a room-defining object. Some light surface scuffs consistent with age and use, but overall in excellent antique condition — the lacquer surface retains strong colour and gloss throughout. Style: Tsugaru-nuri / Kara-nuri (津軽塗・唐塗) Type: Square footed zen tray (四脚付き正方膳) Material: Wood with urushi lacquer (Kara-nuri technique) Width: 39.5 cm Depth: 39.5 cm Height: 8.7 cm Weight: 800 g Condition: Excellent antique condition — minor surface scuffs only; strong colour and gloss Origin: Aomori Prefecture (津軽), Japan Box: Not included NOITICE: The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by DHL , FedEx or Japan Post depend on the situation. It takes about 10 days to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
