Antique Johann Maresch Art Nouveau Majolica Jardinière - Bohemia c. 1900
This exceptional ceramic jardinière was produced by the renowned Johann Maresch factory in Aussig, Bohemia, during the peak of the Art Nouveau movement around 1900.
Crafted from high-quality terracotta, the piece features the vibrant, glassy majolica glazes for which this region was celebrated. The vessel displays an elegant, elongated oval form, characterized by high-set architectural handles and a sturdy, integrated pedestal base.
A deep, chocolate-brown glaze covers the lower section, which is intricately modeled with vertical fluting that catches the light beautifully. Contrasting this dark base is a cream-colored upper band decorated with a relief of delicate pink roses and pale green foliage. This floral motif represents the transition into the Secessionist style, likely under the artistic direction of Ferdinand Maresch.
The interior of the bowl is finished with a clean, off-white glaze, suggesting it was intended for functional use as a planter or centerpiece.
On the underside, the piece bears the impressed model number "4018-2" alongside the characteristic "JM" factory stamp. The craftsmanship reflects the superior technical skill of Bohemian potteries at the turn of the century.
Its substantial presence and refined color palette make it a standout addition to any collection of European Art Nouveau pottery. To ensure its preservation, the item will be professionally and safely packaged using high-quality protective materials. The package will be shipped fully insured to the winning bidder to provide complete peace of mind during transit.
