Autumn Scene (秋景) - Gensou Okuda (奥田元宋,1912–2003) - Japan (Ohne mindestpreis)

Title: Autumn Scene (秋景) Artist: Gensou Okuda (奥田元宋,1912–2003) Technique: Silk-screen Print Signature & Seal: Pencil-signed & sealed by the artist Edition: HC (Artist's Proof) Paper size: 42 × 49.5 cm (16.5 × 19.5 in) Image size: 29 × 37.5 cm (11.4 × 14.8 in) Paper: Cotton paper This work was created c. 1980–1990 by Gensou Okuda (奥田元宋), a celebrated modern Japanese painter and a towering figure in the Nihonga (日本画) tradition. A recipient of the Order of Culture (文化勲章), Japan’s highest cultural honor, he was one of the leading landscape painters in post-war Nihonga. Early in his career, he excelled in delicate, lyrical figure and bird‑and‑flower works; in his mature years, he focused on ink landscapes and polychrome scenery, characterized by clarity, tranquility, and poetic atmosphere. His art synthesizes the traditions of China’s Song‑Yuan dynasties with Japanese naturalism, featuring gentle brushwork and a profound, serene ambiance. His works are held in institutions including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. This piece depicts a serene Japanese lakeside mountain landscape in autumn: snow‑capped peaks and a bright moon are reflected on the lake, with vividly colored maple leaves in full blaze. Strong warm‑cool color contrast creates dramatic visual impact—rich reds and oranges in the foreground contrast sharply with cool greens and blues in the background, yielding strong decorative and artistic qualities. The majestic twin peaks are capped with snow; a golden full moon hangs in the sky; maples are rendered in saturated red, orange, and ochre; the clear green lake mirrors the sky, with water birds gliding gently across the surface. The overall mood is calm and harmonious. The work is signed in pencil “Gensou (元宋)” with a red square seal at the lower right, and marked “H.C.” in pencil at the lower left (artist’s proof / hors commerce). The work is unframed.Minor natural oxidation due to age is present, but it is in good overall condition. This piece is sold without a frame. The images are only for showing the effect after framing.
