A very fine 4/4 violin with grafted lion scroll, labeled Nicolaus Gagliano Filius Joannis Neapoli 1745. The instrument is in ready to play condition with some old professionally repaired cracks on top, grafted scroll, bushed peg-holes, good old ebony set up, new bridge and new strings. The violin has an excellent straight high grained spruce of the top and two pieces back of amazing softly flamed maple with matched sides and scroll. Rich golden amber varnish with tears and wears remains in good condition. Inlaid purfling. The whole length of the violin is 586 mm and the back 353 mm. The width of the upper bouts: 161 mm; middle bouts: 109 mm; lower bouts: 200 mm. The sound is very good, powerful, sweet and rich, suitable for soloist.
